SHAW

As soon as the office door clicks shut, Lizzie pulls away from me.

My mind can’t seem to accept the hurt behind Emi’s eyes when I shouted at her. My gaze burns holes into the door, unsure of whether to make a move toward her or sort my shit out here first.

But hearing Lizzie cry about our broken relationship while my wife and baby were in the room and my fingers still wet from our juices put me on fucking edge, and she took the brunt of it. Shit, I fucked up big time. She didn’t deserve that. I exhale loudly.

“Do you even care? Shaw! I asked you a question, do you even care?” She stamps her foot, bringing my attention back to her.

“What?”

“I said, do you even care?”

I take in her disheveled appearance, quite the contrast to her normally being so well put together. She’s clearly hurting, so I take a deep breath and try and sympathize with the situation I’ve put us in. “Of course I care. I don’t like seeing you so upset, Liz, you know that. But I don’t have a choice in the matter.” I swallow away the guilt at my words. Even if I had a choice, I wouldn’t choose anything differently.

Emi is beautiful and strong. Resilient and carefree, she matches my sexual energy, and she’s going to be as much an amazing mom as she is a wife.

“Don’t have a choice,” she mumbles. Her chest rises higher and higher. “I don’t have a choice in how I feel about you!” She practically screams, making me walk to her in shock.

“Will you keep your fucking voice down?” My voice is low, deadly.

Her lower lip trembles, and she shakes uncontrollably. In the past, I would have backed down easily. But now I’m left with no choice, I’m finally seeing the real her.

For the first time since knowing her, I struggle to find compassion for her as my gaze trails over her body. She’s everything Emi is not, and for the first time in my life, I can’t believe I’ve allowed myself to become controlled by her manipulative behavior. Just what the hell was I thinking? Superficial, self-centered, money-oriented, and manipulative.

Emi is none of those things; all she cares about is her family.

Lizzie holds her stomach, rocking back and forth on her high heels before dropping to the floor, her performance Oscar-worthy. I pinch the bridge of my nose and stare up toward the ceiling as though searching for some divine inspiration.

“Get up off the floor, Liz,” I grit out, trying to disguise my anger, knowing it only sends her further over the edge.

“I . . . I can’t. It hurts too much.” She snivels. “My love for you. It hurts too much, Shaw.”

I roll my eyes at her words. She’s lacking the tugging of the hair this time, but I wonder if it’s about to come when her talons meet with her head. The last time she pulled at her hair, her extensions came out and I had to pay some overpriced hair stylist to fix her.
